There are tons of situation where you can still lose those files permanently. :) No offence if you're already aware of the distinction but Offline Files is NOT a backup. Of course, how often you take snapshots is highly dependent on server resources/load.Īlso please make sure you're backing up the server somehow too. If you setup VSS to take snapshots, say every hour, the most anyone would ever lose is the last hours worth of changes. If you have VSS turned on and setup right (like it sounds you do) the versioning is less of a problem, but you can still have a situation where someone makes multiple changes/syncs between VSS snapshots and they may want to revert to one of the middle changes, which won't be possible. If you set multiple users with offline files pointed to the same folder you WILL end up with versioning/merging problems when they work on the same files simultaneously. It doesn't work for sharing files, though. My use case is to simply sync the my docs folder(especially laptops) to the server so I can back up everyone's my docs directly on the server instead of having to backup every workstation, or having to teach people to work off the server share. It'd probably make more sense to have a mechanism to be able to do this straight from the recycle bin, but watcha gonna do? :) But you can recover an old copy to a different location and then manually merge the new data. Now if you recover the old version over the top of the new version you lose the new data. Before anyone realizes this, someone else opens it and adds some data. For example someone opens a shared file, and accidentally deletes half of the contents, saves it. I think this is so that you can recover a previous version without overwriting the current version.
You're also right that the "previous versions" files don't show in Recycle bin.
You can set up different sync rules for each offline folder set. Browse to any folder on the network you have permissions too, right click it and if you check Make available offline, then you'll have a local copy of those files. You can do this with other folders besides My Docs too. However, If you turn on Offline files for that redirected folder, then you have a local copy of those files too. The files ONLY actually exist on the server.
You're right, that with folder redirection, the client PC thinks it's saving to its local My Docs folder but it's really saving to a folder on the server. I've asked plenty of my own questions here.įolder redirection is the first step in doing offline files. Spiceworks community is great because people really kick in to help each other out.
